This 5-day workshop is for anyone who would like to focus on still life painting, suitable from beginners to more experienced painters. Regardless of what style and medium you are used to creating with, we will go through the basics of still life painting; from how to organise your palette and mixing colours, learning how to set up a still life, to various ways of paint handling to achieve different effects in the finished painting. Jacky will guide you through it all, step by step, and paint alongside you. We will talk about things such as composition, complementary colours, values and material care.

Everything you need to participate in the workshop will be provided by the school. However, if you prefer to bring your own material you are most welcome to do so, it might be helpful as you are accustomed to them. Specifically brushes might be advisable to bring from your own materials.

Jacky is currently working as a painting and drawing instructor at SARA and has years of experience painting from life and teaching groups of various levels and ages.

There are 9 spaces available in this workshop and students will work in our ateliers at SARA Academy.

The workshop will focus on portrait drawing. Students will be instructed on how to produce a portrait working from a block-in to a fully modelled drawing, covering strategies to effectively describe form, likeness and sensitive handling of materials. Students will be guided through the process of creating a portrait drawing. James will provide detailed instruction on how to develop a drawing from a block-in to a completed piece that accurately describes proportion, form and likeness. Over the. course of five days, James will deliver active feedback to students and produce a demonstration alongside them for reference. He will also cover various techniques and strategies to help students better understand their materials and handling methods.

James is currently working as an artist and teacher in Cape Town, South Africa. After receiving his BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design, James completed his studies at Grand Central Atelier in New York City.

The workshop will take place over 5 days, six hours a day with two live models.

Everything you need to participate in the workshop will be provided by the school. However, if you prefer to bring your own material you are most welcome to do so, it might be helpful as you are accustomed to them. Specifically brushes might be advisable to bring from your own materials.

There are 8 spaces available in this workshop and students will work in our ateliers at SARA Academy. All materials are included, as well as an afternoon fika (typically consisting of a Swedish pastry/cake with tea/coffee).

Few subjects are as expressive and timeless as the human figure. Though challenging, figure drawing is an immensely rewarding practice—one that lies at the very heart of SARA’s curriculum. We are delighted to once again host this workshop with Theodora Capăt as the instructor. Since graduating from SARA in 2013, Theodora has built a successful career as a professional artist and has continued to teach at the school. She is admired for her exceptional skill and cherished for the passion and clarity she brings to her teaching.

Theodora will through demonstrations guide you through the steps of constructing a figure drawing. She will introduce the use of charcoal and explain the workflow behind approaching the figure with confidence and sensitivity.  At SARA, we teach using the comparative measurement method, giving students a reliable and intuitive foundation for building accurate and expressive drawings.

There are 12 spaces available in this workshop and students will work in our beautiful model room at SARA Academy.

In this 5-day workshop students will work from the live model, over an extended pose. They will discover a clear and straightforward way to approach painting the portrait, with an emphasis on structure, form, and light.

This workshop is suitable for you even if you are a beginner or an experienced painter.

We will go through the different steps of understanding composition, structure, and form to work towards achieving likeness in your portrait. You will leave this workshop with a more competent knowledge in starting your own portrait painting. We will achieve this through demonstrations and individual critiques, with all information covered in this course thoroughly explained, and each artist will work towards meeting their individual goals.
