Floral Painting with James Cowper
1 - 5 July 2024

Instructor: James Cowper
Time: 09.00 - 16.00, 12.00 - 13.00 Lunch
Price: 10.000 SEK (including VAT and 1000 SEK non-refundable deposit)
Included: All materials (oil paint, canvas, paintbrushes, palette, easel etc), lunch and Swedish "fika"

This workshop is both aimed at artists wishing to improve their skills and knowledge but also to those with very little experience of Floral painting. All students are welcome and the instructor will be adapting to everyone’s skill levels. Students will learn how to paint flowers effectively to take advantage of their natural beauty. Flowers can be an intimidating subject to paint for both beginners and more experienced painters. Students will learn how to deal with their subtle colours, shapes, lights and shades, and their near constant shifting and changing. James will show students various techniques he uses from under paintings and glazes to direct alla prima and palette knife painting.

James lives and works in the Scottish Borders. He was part of the full time teaching faulty at SARA for several years. There are 8 spaces available on this workshop and students will work in our ateliers at SARA Academy, where we also will serve the lunch. Please note that if less than 4 students sign up for the workshop or if the workshop needs to be cancelled, we will inform students at least one month before start and a full refund will be paid, otherwise the deposit is non-refundable.

Figure Drawing with Theodora Capat
1 - 5 July 2024

Instructor: Theodora Capat
Time: 09.00 - 16.00, 12.00 - 13.00 Lunch
Price: 10.000 SEK (including VAT and 1000 SEK non-refundable deposit)
Included: Lunch, Swedish "fika" and materials (pencils, charcoal, paper)

The human figure has always been one of the main subject for all artists- from the beginning of time until today. It’s a challenging skill to master and so extremely satisfying when drawn or painted accurately.

On the Figure Drawing workshop, students will learn how to deconstruct the human figure, studying it’s complex structure and applying it to a long pose with a live model. By using the comparative method and key anatomical guidelines taught at SARA, the student will learn how to see and break down the human figure, achieving good proportions .

The instructor will adapt to each individual’s varied skills in drawing. Theodora is currently teaching on the three year program at SARA as well as exhibiting and painting in her studio in Kastellet, Vaxholm, Stockholm, where she also has private students.

There are 15 places in total available on the Figure Drawing Workshop and the course will take place in the spacious model room at SARA Academy. All materials are included, as well as lunch and fika (typically consisting of a Swedish pastry/cake with tea/coffee) and will be served at the school.

Please note that if less than 5 students sign up for the workshop we will inform students at least one month before start and a full refund will be paid, otherwise the deposit is non-refundable.

Etching with Hans-Peter Szameit
1 - 5 July 2024

Instructor: Hans-Peter Szameit
Time: 09.00 - 16.00, 12.00 - 13.00 Lunch
Price: 10.000 SEK (including VAT and 1000 SEK non-refundable deposit)
Included: Lunch, "Swedish fika" and materials (listed below)

Learn the basics of the intaglio printing techniques of etching, dry point and aquatint, and use them to create your own etching from a copper plate.  Participants will be guided through the process of etching all the way from the transferring the initial drawing to the copper plate, etching and inking the plate, to pulling the final print through the press by hand.
Hans-Peter Szameit, co-founder of SARA, will lead the workshop.

We will have 8 places in total available on this workshop.
Students will work in our ateliers at SARA Academy where we also will serve the lunch.
Materials are provided.

Materials included:
– Copper plate
– Paper for 20 prints (including proofs)

Additional copper plates and paper may be purchased at the school.
All other tools and materials necessary for etching are provided for use.

If you wish to make an etching from an existing drawing that you have created, please bring it to the workshop. Note: not all drawings may be suitable given the limited time and scope of the workshop.  Ideally, drawings should be the same size or slightly smaller than the copper plate that is provided.

Please note that if less than 4 students sign up for the workshop or if the workshop needs to be cancelled due to the pandemic, we will inform students at least one month before start and a full refund will be paid, otherwise the deposit is non-refundable.

“I have been on a one-week workshop in Landscape painting. Wonderful nature and with a very knowledgeable and generous instructor I have been able to learn more and increase my ability in Landscape painting. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to learn a little bit of the knowledge available at The Swedish Academy of Realist Art."
